Streets, buildings and history
Kingfield was farmland in the second half of the nineteenth century, with fewer than twenty farms in 1874. The city's southern border stood at 38th Street in 1885 and reached 54th Street by 1887, which brought the area into Minneapolis. After the First World War, the land south of 40th Street and north of Minnehaha Creek was developed.
About three-quarters of the single-family houses in the neighborhood were built before 1920. Houses between Lake Street and 40th Street mostly date from 1903 to 1914, in Colonial Revival and Craftsman bungalow styles. For residents, that means porches, mature trees and a short walk to the corner for errands. The Church of the Incarnation, which opened in 1918 at 38th Street and Pleasant Avenue, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2022.
