Northeast at a glance

Northeast is one of Minneapolis's 11 official communities and includes 13 neighborhoods with NE addresses. The city limits form its north and east edges, the Mississippi River its west, and irregular streets and rail lines its south. It is sometimes called Nordeast, which reflects its northern and eastern European immigrant history.

By 1930, immigrants made up nearly 60 percent of the population, with Lebanese, Polish, Finnish, German, Slovak, Russian and Ukrainian communities. Today Somali and Latin American residents are prominent, and Northeast is a center of the Ecuadorian community in Minneapolis.

Streets, buildings and history

The Arts District, bounded by Central Avenue, Broadway, the Mississippi River and 26th Avenue, was officially recognized by the city in 2002. The Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association has run Art-A-Whirl, a May art crawl, since 1996. The Northrup King Building, begun in 1917 as a seed company complex, now houses over 135 tenants. Other landmarks include the Grain Belt Beer sign, the Ritz Theater and Kramarczuk's Deli.

Central Avenue between 18th and 27th avenues has had mixed-use development since 2000. It has restaurants serving many cuisines, along with Latin American, South Asian and Middle Eastern markets and the Eastside Food Co-op. Johnson Street includes the Quarry Shopping Center, built on a former brownfield site that was cleaned up in 1996.

Nails and beauty near Northeast

A nail salon on Johnson Street NE serves residents of the northeast corner of the city, and others are a short drive away in downtown and the North Loop. Many Northeast residents work in studios and shops, so hand protection and cuticle oil matter more than a perfect manicure on workdays.

If you are an artist or maker, protect your hands: gloves for solvents and dust, cream at night, and a bare-nail break when polish starts to chip from daily use. The healthy nails basics have a short list.
