Uptown at a glance
Uptown is not an official neighborhood. It is a commercial district centered at Hennepin Avenue and West Lake Street, and it spreads across parts of four neighborhoods in the Calhoun Isles community: Lowry Hill East, East Bde Maka Ska, South Uptown and East Isles. Historically, its limits ran roughly from Bde Maka Ska on the west to Dupont Avenue on the east, and from 28th Street on the north to 31st Street on the south.
The district was branded Uptown in the 1920s, after a commercial area began to form near the lakes. Its three big lakes, Bde Maka Ska, Lake Harriet and Lake of the Isles, became popular in the 1880s as cottage and boating destinations reached by streetcar.
Streets, buildings and history
Uptown's landmarks include Seven Points, the shopping and office complex that was developed in the 1980s as Calhoun Square, and the Uptown Transit Station on Hennepin Avenue. The Midtown Greenway, a former railway cutting converted to a bike and walking route, runs two blocks north of Lake Street. A walk along the Greenway puts you within a block or two of most of Uptown's shops.
The Uptown Art Fair takes over the district every August. Visitors come for the art, and many make a stop at a nearby salon or boutique the same day.

Uptown mixes boutiques, restaurants and a number of nail salons on or near Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue. It is an easy place to book a manicure before dinner or a pedicure after a morning on the lakes. Walk-in availability varies, so call to check.
