Linden Hills at a glance

Linden Hills is a neighborhood in southwest Minneapolis. Bde Maka Ska and West 36th Street mark its north, Lake Harriet and William Berry Parkway its east, West 47th Street its south and France Avenue its west. The 2020 census counted 7,838 residents.

The neighborhood takes its name from its linden trees and rolling hills. Settlement dates to 1849, though it was mostly cottages and open land until the 1870s. It grew when the Como-Harriet Streetcar Line was extended, which made the lake a popular getaway for young and wealthy Minneapolis residents.

Streets, buildings and history

The 43rd and Upton commercial corridor was built along the streetcar line in the 1920s and now has many shops and restaurants in small buildings. The main platform and carbarn of the Como-Harriet Streetcar Line, near West 42nd Street and Queen Avenue, still stand.

At the lake, the Lake Harriet Bandshell on the eastern shore is the fifth on the site. The current bandshell was built in 1985. The first two burned, the third was destroyed in a windstorm and the fourth was demolished. Southwest High School stands at West 47th Street between Abbott and Chowen avenues.
